There are two types of EGR valve failures: normally open and normally closed. The symptoms differ between these two scenarios. If the EGR valve is stuck in the fully open position and cannot close completely, the vehicle will emit black smoke, accompanied by symptoms such as weak acceleration, unstable idling, increased fuel consumption, and insufficient power. If the EGR valve is stuck in the closed position and cannot open completely, it will affect vehicle emissions, causing the vehicle to fail emissions standards. In this case, the vehicle is likely to fail its annual vehicle inspection. Most models will have their engine malfunction indicator light illuminated, while some models will have their EPC (Electronic Power Control) malfunction indicator light illuminated. The EGR valve is primarily responsible for controlling the exhaust gases produced by vehicle combustion. It can reduce the production of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, thus benefiting environmental protection. However, in some models, a faulty EGR valve can also cause excessive fuel consumption. If left unrepaired for an extended period, it can lead to a cylinder explosion. Due to a large amount of fuel entering the cylinder, the piston and cylinder will be damaged by the incompressible liquid, resulting in what is known as a cylinder explosion.
