The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve plays a crucial role in a vehicle's emission control system. Its main function is to regulate the amount of exhaust gas entering the intake manifold, ensuring that some exhaust gas can re-enter the combustion process, thereby effectively reducing the amount of exhaust gas emitted into the atmosphere.

The EGR valve is a highly electromechanical integrated component, typically installed on gasoline engines, precisely controlling the amount of exhaust gas recirculated. It is generally located on the side of the intake manifold, near the throttle valve, and connected to the exhaust manifold via a short metal pipe to achieve exhaust gas recirculation.

The core function of the EGR system is to reduce the peak temperature in the combustion chamber by introducing an appropriate amount of exhaust gas into the cylinder to participate in combustion, thereby reducing the formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx). During this process, the EGR valve dynamically adjusts the amount of exhaust gas recirculated based on the engine's real-time operating conditions to balance engine performance and emission control requirements.

 

Nitrogen and oxygen readily react chemically under high temperature and pressure to form nitrogen oxides. The engine combustion chamber is precisely such an environment, especially noticeable during acceleration. Therefore, controlling exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in this process is crucial.

 

When the engine is under load, the EGR valve opens, allowing a small amount of exhaust gas to mix with fresh air in the intake manifold and enter the combustion chamber. At idle, the EGR valve remains closed, and almost no exhaust gas participates in recirculation. These exhaust gases themselves do not burn, but they absorb some of the combustion heat, thereby reducing combustion temperature and pressure, further suppressing nitrogen oxide production. As engine speed and load increase, the amount of exhaust gas entering the combustion chamber also increases accordingly.
